Breast Cancer Foundation Urged To Stop Association With Planned Parenthood
7.1.2002

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Douglas R. Scott, president of Life Decisions International, today called on The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to stop funding Planned Parenthood.

"Planned Parenthood is the world's leading pro-abortion empire," Scott said. "Giving money to Planned Parenthood legitimizes the abortion-committing group. It is impossible to separate Planned Parenthood's less controversial practices from its killing business."

In its 2000-2001 STEP Reports of Grants (released in November 2001), it is noted that The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation supported several Planned Parenthood affiliates. These include Planned Parenthood affiliates in Glenwood Springs, Colorado; Washington, Iowa; Boise, Idaho, Waco, Texas; New Haven, Connecticut; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Grand Rapids, Michigan; El Paso, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Bellingham, Washington; Salt Lake City, Utah; West Palm Beach, Florida; and Casper, Wyoming.

"As a person with three sisters and a wonderful mother, I am horrified about the possibility of breast cancer touching my family. I was shocked and greatly saddened when I heard that the executive director emeritus of Life Decisions International was diagnosed with breast cancer," Scott said. "Yet I know that all of them would be strongly opposed to giving any money to Planned Parenthood for any reason whatsoever. This is not simply because of Planned Parenthood's abortion business and highly failed 'educational' programs. It is also because they understand that Planned Parenthood uses its breast cancer and other less controversial activities to build a better reputation and a larger customer base."

Scott urged The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to give funds for research, education, treatment and screening to groups that do not have "deadly baggage." He also points out that many of the Foundation's grants went to groups actively involved with "family planning."

"Planned Parenthood's hierarchy will do most anything to make money and improve its highly controversial reputation. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation should not be aiding this effort," Scott said.

Scott said it would be sad if pro-life people chose to forgo participation in the Race for the Cure program because The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation insists on funding the chief enemy of the unborn child. "Yet this will surely happen and the Foundation has no one to blame but itself." Scott said that pro-life people, including himself, will be supporting cancer-related programs that are not associated with Planned Parenthood.
